Tendai Buddhism
Tendai Buddhism was brought to Japan from China by the Monk Saicho (Dengyo Daishi) at the very beginning of the ninth century. Tendai teachings are based on the Lotus Sutra, and Tendai is a Mahayana school of Buddhism incorporating the Bodhisattva ideal of compassion for all sentient beings. Tendai is an eclectic school with a variety of practices. Many schools of Buddhism were founded by teachers who originally were Tendai monks. To learn more about Tendai please visit www.tendai.org.
